To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - 807 Words

Throughout the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, author Harper Lee challenges the societal norms of gender roles, within the character â€Å"Jean Louise,† also referred to as her tomboy name â€Å"Scout.† Scout battles the society-defined roles in many ways throughout the text. Many factors lead to Scout redefining femininity, including Jem and Dill’s coming-of-age dilemma. An exploration of gender roles and inequality throughout the text and this time period will allow one to understand how Scout was able to overcome gender stereotyping. Scout had been raised in a masculine environment, with her father Atticus and her brother Jem, after her mother passed away. During the first chapters of the book, many negative comments were made about acting or being a girl from Jem. Jem would say comments such as, â€Å" ’Scout I’m tellin’ you for the last time, shut your trap or go home-I declare to the Lord you’re gettin’ more like a girl ever yday!’ â€Å". Comments like this were made throughout the beginning of the book, making it seem that acting feminine was inferior to masculinity. This environment contradicted what many believed a little girl should dress and act like. The first evidence of the gender role battle became prominent when Atticus, Jem and Scout visited Finch Landing, where their Aunt Alexandra lived. Referring to Scouts attire, Aunt Alexandra said that she must wear a dress and behave like a lady to â€Å"be a ray of sunshine in [her] father’s lonely life†. October Sky Marion Eady The film October Sky (1999), directed by Joe Johnson is based on a true story of Homer Hickman ( a coal miners son) who is inspired to build a rocket after the Russian launch of the first artificial satellite (Sputnik) into orbit. The film definitely focuses on the course theme of being a social outcast. This is explored in the film through three people, John Hickman (Homers Father), the town of Coalwood and Mr.Turner (Homers principle). Firstly, John Hickman, father of Homer Hickman and a coal miner at the Coalwood mines in West Virginia, socially outcasts his son. Why? Because John doesn’t agree with his son building a rocket. Now you may ask, how could a principle socially outcast their own student. Mr. Turner (Homers principle) socially out casted Homer by not allowing him to do what he loved. Homer wanted to make a rocket to get a scholarship but the principle made it so hard on homer. He had Homer arrested because he thought that Homer started a fire, he didn’t allow the boys to work on their rocket at school or make the stuff for the rocket so that it can fly. It seemed like Mr.Turner didn’t want one of his own students to succeed. But with the help from Mrs. Riley she helped Homer and his friends succeed and she fought against the principle. A lot of the labels on food will say that it is farm fresh, but does it really come from all natural environments or not? It is a good question to consider, because people have a right to know where their food is coming from and how it is processed. Many effects are added to the film to make it seem more dramatic and real. It uses animated effect, zooming, and also rotating effect where it goes all the way around the area to show the setting. Animated effects were used to show different animals that the processing is done to, and also the list of stores that sells products from certain companies such as TYSON. Zooming effect is used to get an up-close look of what is going on to the animals, what is in their food, and also to show down inside of the machines that the chickens go through. The rotating effects show the setting in one part of the film where one of the chicken owners let the camera people come in and see the environment that the chickens are growing and living in. It shows proof of how harsh the living environment and growing process of the chickens are. Emotion is also a part of this film. It will either cause a person to feel a negative, positive, or mixed feeling on the subject. This refers to the Ethos of the film. Some people may feel happy because the way the chickens are given growth hormones means people have more food sources and it comes in faster and cheaper. Other people may be upset because it harms the animals and throws off the natural growth process. Some other people may think it doesn’t really matter as long as people have food. Each person has their own opinion, but that is why it is important that the actual facts and processes are detailed to the people, so that people can understand and decide for themselves how they feel about it. In conclusion, the film is a trustworthy source because it has actual video of proof to back its statements up. The film talks about the chickens living in harsh and dirty environments, the way they are given growth hormones to speed up the growth process and increase the size of the breasts, and also how the cows are fed a corn- based food. All of the statements that are made about the processes of food sources, have video footage to show and explain what is being said to the viewer(s). This film was an eye opener for most people but being that I am a sixth generation farmer I understand how the seed, meat, and poultry corporations work. When cattle get this disease it sometimes is not caught and the cow gets slaughtered and ends up on our dinner plate and then we receive the disease by eating the meat. This needs to change cows need to be fed grass and hay, and should not be on a corn only diet. This film also covered the poultry industry and how poultry is being grown at a very fast rate and how the chicken houses are not safe or very sanitary. The poultry houses are sealed with no sunlight. Chickens in these houses are bigger and grown at a faster rate which often leads to death and disease. The last section of this film talks about the seed corporation. During this section they discussed how farmers were getting the short end of the stick with trying to battle with Monsanto, which is the largest seed producing company in America. It is bad that farmers only have one place to go for seed for crops and after Monsanto buys all the other seed companies in America where do farmers turn when they don’t have the funds to keep running. Those farmers turn to banks for loans to buy the seed from this company and hopes that it will produce. If that seed doesn’t produce a good crop farmers go bankrupt. This documentary doesn’t state but shows what America’s food industry is turning into and is heading to a monopoly industry. The food industry is failing as a whole and America should take it back by growing and raising our own food. We should rely less on foods that are highly processed, and put more back to farmers to make a new food industry. Without farmers America would fail. It’s like my Father always says â€Å"farmers built this country, and only a farmer can rebuild it†. This implies that firms are redirecting their attention from production to the customer in order to improve their competitiveness. This means that identification and satisfaction of customers’ needs is the most important aspect of marketing (Halstead, Jones Lesseig 2008, vol. 13, pp. 183-192). Therefore, marketing being a management process relies on the use of scientific, mathematical and economics techniq ues to achieve its purposes. These techniques help in understanding the customers’ needs and how to satisfy them. However, Doyle’s definition ignores the fact that marketing is also associated with art and creativity. Customer Orientation The third part of Doyle’s definition, â€Å"†¦developing relationships with valued customers†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Doyle 2002, p. 29) implies that the customer is the focus of the marketing process. This means that firms must understand the demand of their products in order to remain competitiv e. This is based on the fact that the demand reflects the wants and needs of the customers (Halstead, Jones Lesseig 2008, vol. 13, pp. 183-192). Thus all marketing decisions will be informed by the wants or needs of the consumers. For example, Toyota will be competitive if its pricing decisions are informed by the amount of cash that potential buyers are willing and able to spend on its cars. The implication of this concept is that only the marketing strategies that are inline with the needs or wants of the customers will be pursued. This calls for a mechanism for evaluating the suitability of each marketing strategy. Besides, formulation of the marketing strategy must begin with evaluation of the needs of the customers (Halstead, Jones Lesseig 2008, vol. 13, pp. 183-192). Finally, place denotes access to the produced goods. It determines the customers’ ability to buy the produced goods. Thus Toyota can increase the sales of its cars if it embarks on an efficient distribution channel in the global market. While Doyle believed that focusing on the cus tomer is the best way to maximize returns, the following views oppose his perspective. First, his perspective omits the role of internal efficiency in regard to marketing success. The marketing department must work together with other departments such as finance and research and development. This means that poor coordination of these departments will lead to a failure in the marketing process even if all the needs of the customers have been taken into account (Srivastava, Fahey Christensen 2001, vol. 29, pp. 771-802). For example, the finance department can fail to fund the marketing strategy on the ground that it will interfere with the firm’s cash flows. Segmentation According to Doyle’s definition, returns are maximized if the firm is able to establish relationships with valued customers. ‘Valued customers’ in this case denotes the concept of segmentation. This helps a company to focus its resources on the section of the market that it can best serve at the existing level of competition. Thus Doyle believed that firms can realize high returns if they focus their marketing activities on particular segments of the market. For example, Toyota will be able to realize more sales if it continues to target the middle income earners who currently form the bulk of its customers. However, most market segments usually become saturated as competition intensifies and this causes price reduction (Srivastava, Fahey Christensen 2001, vol. 29, pp. 771-802). Thus even the most valuable segments will not realize maximum returns. This implies that in addition to the existing segments, firms must identify and establish relationships with customers in new segments. Competitive Advantage This refers to the â€Å"strategic advantages that one business has over its rivals in a competitive industry† (Siomkos Viechopoulos 2002, vol. 3, pp. 22-38). The last part of Doyle’s definition relates to creation of competitive advantages in the market. Competitive advantages are created if a firm is able to position itself as the best in the market. This is achieved if the consumers are able to identify with and remain loyal to the firm’s brands in the market. Competitive advantages are created as follows. First, the firm must analyze the influence of macro-environmental factors on its performance. Such factors include â€Å"political, economic, social, technology, environment and legal factors† (Siomkos Viechopoulos 2002, vol. 3, pp. 22-38). The firm must be able to exploit the opportunities associated with these factors while reducing the threats resulting from them in order to create competitive advantages. Second, the firm must analyze the level of competition in order to formulate the best marketing strategy. Finally, the firm must understand the consumers’ behavior in regard to consumption patterns. This helps in influencing the customers’ purchasing decisions (Siomkos Viechopoulos 2002, vol. 3, pp. 22-38). Thus the firm will be able to increase its sales and market share as the customers become loyal to the brand. Conclusion and Recommendations Doyle’s definition of marketing focuses on the customer and the importance of maintaining relationships with customers. According to his definition, the main purpose of marketing is to add value by maximizing returns on investments. Even though his perspective can be used by a firm to maximize returns, his definition does not apply under all market conditions. Consequently, the following recommendations can be considered. First, the marketing process should focus on the product and organizational efficiency in addition to the customer (Srivastava, Fahey Christensen 2001, vol. 29, pp. 771-802). In a sentence such as By this time tomorrow, I will have left, will have left is in the future perfect tense. In English, the future perfect tense is expressed, as in the example above, by using will have (or shall have) followed by the past participle. The Spanish future perfect tense is formed in much the same way as Englishs: the future indicative form of haber followed by the past participle. So I will have left would be habrà © salido. In other words, the statement or question becomes less speculative and assumes agreement by the listener. No habrn perdido la esperanza en este mundo. A Related Tense: The Conditional Perfect In Spanish, the future and conditional tenses are closely related; in fact, the conditional tense is sometimes known as the future hypothetical. As such, the conditional perfect is often used in sentences of the type shown in these examples to indicate a conjecture. Si hubià ©ramos comido la pizza, habrà ­amos tenido ms energà ­a.
