One of the common traits dystopian novels include is, information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. In Parable of the Sower it is not easy to get information about what happens outside of the walls. The way most families get their information is by radio. When Lauren and the rest go on the road they no longer have information on what is going on in other cities or the dangers of fires ahead of the road.
